Sugar and Tooth Decay

Sugar, acid and cavities go hand in hand when talking about tooth decay. The total amount of sugar you eat has less of an impact on cavity formation than the way in which it is consumed.

Tooth decay happens when a bacteria called plaque feeds on simple sugars, creating acids that break down tooth enamel.

When you eat or drink something sweet, it takes that bacteria about 20 seconds to convert it to acid. Once the bacteria becomes an acid, it can take 20 minutes or more before our saliva can neutralize it.

Taking that into consideration, that means a can of soda is a lot less harmful to your teeth when you drink it in a few minuets instead of sipping it over several hours.

What about diet sodas? Well, diet soda and many other berverages are still acidic enough to support the harmful, acid loving bacteria.

Studies have also shown that spill resistant sippy-cups, unless they only contain water have been linked to tooth decay in toddlers.

Sour candies have even been found to be significantly more distructive to the tooth enamal than regular sweet candy because of their acidity.

See the following graph to see where your favorite sour candies compare to battery acid, which has a pH of 1.0. Notice that the enamel will break down at a pH of 4.0.

Sports are in full swing. Are you required to wear a mouth guard? You should probably wear one anyway, even at practice.

Here are 4 things to keep in mind when a facial injury occurs.

1. If there is ANY loss of consciousness, even if the athlete recovers quickly, seek medical attention immediately. There could be serious, hidden internal injuries.

2. Place ice or a cold compress on any swelling.

3. For obvious tooth fractures, rinse the mouth with clean water. Keep the tooth fragment if it is found, and get dental help quickly.

4. When teeth are knocked out, the best chance of saving the tooth is to have it surgically replaced within one hour. Save the tooth in clean water and see your dentist immediately.
